New traffic management system could reduce train delays by 15%

The introduction of a new traffic management system is set to deliver more punctual trains on journeys between London Paddington and Bristol Parkway.

Described by Network Rail as a “word first rollout”, Resonate’s Luminate system manages and monitors the flow of trains to identify conflicts.

When disruptions happen, the system enables real-time re-planning to occur so that freight and passenger train services can get back to normal as fast as possible.

David Waboso, group managing director for Digital Railway, said the technology could reduce train delays by as much as 15 per cent.

Resonate has signed a two year contract with Network Rail, one year to deploy the system, which has already begun, and one to trial Luminate beginning in the summer of 2018.

Resonate is picking up the majority of the cost for the project but if delays reduce as predicted, compensation paid to train operating companies will also shrink and the money saved will be shared between Network Rail and Resonate.

Waboso said: “We need our partners in the supply chain to be 100 per cent invested in the products they provide for us, so why not share the costs and share the benefits? That’s the way to produce first-rate improvements to the railway.

“We’re not interested in paying a fortune for a product and then when challenges come our way, as they inevitably do, having none of the product expertise in the organisation to deal with them.”

Anna Ince, chief executive officer at Resonate, added: “Digital Railway’s enlightened and open collaborative approach to early contractor involvement was the catalyst for our proposal.  Understanding the outcomes required, as well as the business case, enabled us to make a ground breaking commercial offer.”
