New Siemens Vectron freight locos for PKP Cargo

Poland’s largest freight operator, PKP Cargo, has exercised an option to purchase an additional five multisystem Vectron locomotives from Siemens Mobility – an order which, with maintenance, is worth around €26 million.

Poland’s PKP Cargo will purchase five additional Siemens Vectron MS locomotives.

PKP Cargo, the second largest freight operator in Europe, originally ordered 15 Vectron MS locomotives in September 2015, with an option to purchase five more. That option has been exercised and the additional locomotives will be used for international routes in the north-south corridor, with the first locomotives being delivered go in the middle of the year.

Siemens’ Vectron MS locomotives have a maximum output of 6.4MW, a top speed of 160km/h and are equipped with the European Train Control System (ETCS) as well as specified national train control systems. The MS model is approved to run in Poland, Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania and Hungary, but other models from the Vectron family are able to run in 18 European countries.

A move to the power generation and offshore oil supply sector followed as Nigel became director of Entwistle-Sandiacre, a subsidiary of the Australian-owned group Aurora plc. At the same time, Nigel spent ten years as a Technical Commissioner with the RAC Motor Sports Association, responsible for drafting and enforcing technical regulations for national and international motor racing series. Joining Rail Engineer in 2008, Nigel’s first assignment was a report on new three-dimensional mobile mapping and surveying equipment, swiftly followed by a look at vegetation control machinery. He continues to write on a variety of topics for most issues.
