Network Rail completes Crossrail upgrades on Great Eastern main line

Network Rail has completed track and station improvements at Shenfield as part of ongoing work on Crossrail.

At Shenfield, engineers have built a new Crossrail-dedicated platform and three new sidings to increase capacity in preparation for the new service.

In addition, the entire rail junction at Shenfield, including track, signals and overhead power lines, has been improved to allow services to freely pass through the junction without having to wait for other trains, which will in turn reduce the risk of delays.

More than 5,000 metres of new track and 26 new track switches have been laid as part of the junction remodelling works as well as the installation of more than 200 new overhead line structures supporting 21,000 metres of new OLE.

Trains on this section of the route will initially be seven carriages long. The shorter formation trains will be extended to full-length, nine-carriage trains in 2019.

Shenfield – which sits on the Great Eastern main line – will become the eastern terminus of Crossrail, which will be known as the Elizabeth line once it is operational from December 2018.

In addition, work took place across stations between Liverpool Street and Shenfield in readiness for the new trains.

Further work continues along the route including Transport for London’s installation of new lifts at Maryland, Manor Park and Seven Kings. The Ilford sidings, where the new trains will be stabled, are also nearing completion.

    • The abbreviation S&C (standing for Switch & Crossing = “points”) is commonly used in the industry. If you look at a technical magazine, expect to see technical terms used.

  1. I’m so pleased that the new Platform 6 is now opened and platform 5 has reopened. Which means Greater Anglia Southend Victoria trains will start to use platform 4 freeing up platform 3 for other services and passing trains.
