The design for Montreal’s new metro train has been revealed by the Alstom-led consortium Groupe des partenaires pour la mobilité des Montréalais (Groupe PMM).
The new Réseau express métropolitain (REM) trains will carry a livery that was chosen by the public and was inspired by the new Samuel De Champlain bridge – the vehicle’s headlights directly recall the shrouds of the new bridge. The trains feature large windscreens at either end that will give passengers good views of the city as they travel.
Alstom is due to supply 106 two-car trainsets for the driverless light-metro system, which will be 67 kilometres long and include 26 stations. It is the largest transit project in Quebec since the original Montreal metro was built over 50 years ago and will connect downtown Montreal to the South Shore, the North Shore, the West Island and Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport.
The Alstom-led consortium building it was awarded the contract in April 2018, although preparatory work had already commenced in March. The CAN$6.3 billion project will employ around 34,000 people at its peak, and create around 1,000 permanent jobs once the REM starts running.
Services are due to commence over the first, southern section, between Rive-Sud and Central Station, in 2021.
